Saint-Tropez, French Riviera, France

Saint-Tropez: The guide

The irresistible village of Saint-Tropez is the jewel of the French Riviera. The superficial image of Saint-Tropez of the jet-set is just one of the many faces of the small fisherman’s port. The motto of Saint-Tropez, “ad usque fidelis” (faithful to the end) takes on its full meaning from the first discovery.

Excellence has gathered here the best reasons to live an experience in Saint-Tropez. Follow the guide:

Behind Saint-Tropez lies a multifaceted reality: that of a Gulf where the traveller can go from a walk in a wild and unspoilt nature to a wild evening in an internationally renowned nightclub. Saint-Tropez cultivates paradoxes; here personalities from the jet-set, the business world or show business rub shoulders with authentic Tropezians.

The Gulf of Saint-Tropez is one of the only spots on the planet where you can be propelled from one universe to another without changing your destination. You can be seen on the terrace of the mythical Café Sénéquier, and meditate in the heart of the 10-hectare park of the Château de la Messardière.

It is the place chosen by great fortunes such as Bernard Arnault, the boss of LVMH or Roman Abramovitch, a Russian multimillionaire and owner of the Chelsea Club, to stay in total anonymity. It is also the place chosen by great show-business personalities such as Léonardo Di Caprio or Beyoncé and Jay-Z to make a name for themselves publicly by indulging in the joys of jet-skiing in the Bay of Pampelonne, before breaking out the champagne at the Caves du Roy.

The Gulf of Saint-Tropez is especially precious for its natural spaces, still wild. The coastal path, protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral, offers landscapes preserved from human activity.

The charms of Saint-Tropez vary according to the seasons. The very mild winters give way to off-seasons where travellers can have lunch on the terrace before enjoying the warm summer nights.

The first tremors of the season can be felt as early as April. The nights are still fresh, but the beautiful sunny days already allow you to have lunch on the terrace of one of the beaches of Pampelonne and stroll along the alleys of the mythical Provencal market of the Place des Lices. If you travel in May, you can attend the Bravades de Saint-Tropez, a centuries-old tradition that recalls the roots of the corsair city. All generations celebrate, for three days, the resistance of the people of Saint-Tropez against pirate attacks.

The summer season is in full swing during July and August, when days and nights are lively on the beaches, in town, on the port or in the evening in the restaurants and clubs of Saint-Tropez. Every occasion is an alibi for partying, and the greatest DJs come to mix on the beaches like Nikki Beach or in the evenings at the VIP Room and Caves du Roy.

Summer madness is followed by the Indian summer, a more serene season in Saint-Tropez. You will enjoy still warm days and milder evenings. When the festive summer people have left the port, Saint-Tropez reveals a more authentic face, and the beaches of Pampelonne and L’Escalet are less crowded so that you can enjoy them to the full. The season closes with the week of the Voiles de Saint-Tropez, during which the corsair city regains its wild identity.

Saint-Tropez is not one of these easily accessible destinations. It will be necessary to be patient in the summer period to access the Peninsula, which makes its rarity and its charm.

If you reach the French Riviera by plane, commercial flights will drop you off at Nice or Toulon airports. If you travel by private jet, the business airports of Cannes-Mandelieu and Saint-Tropez-La Mole will welcome your aircraft.

Saint-Tropez is also accessible by sea, by sailing aboard a yacht or one of the shuttles that link the most famous destinations of the French Riviera.

To avoid traffic jams, the fastest alternative, which will save you precious vacation minutes, is the helicopter transfer. Several helipads are spread over the Saint-Tropez peninsula: Grimaud heliport, private heliports or Saint-Tropez-La Môle airport will bring you closer to your Tropezian residence.

What makes Saint-Tropez so unique is its wild environment. Starting from the splendid beach of l’Escalet, you can enjoy snorkelling in the translucent waters or take a stroll along the Sentier du Littoral to Cap Taillat and its breathtaking panorama.

Enjoy the most beautiful views of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez by embarking for a day aboard a yacht and enjoy a tasty meal on board before boarding a jet-ski off the Pampelonne Bay. For an authentic and delicious lunch, Loulou Beach will dazzle you with its Mediterranean dishes. You can also rent a deckchair there before boarding your yacht again.

You can also combine a day of idleness with the discovery of local products, by strolling through the alleys of the Saint-Tropez market, by tasting a slice of the famous Tarte Tropézienne on the Place des Lices, or by succumbing to the latest trends in the shops of the most prominent jewellery and ready-to-wear brands. After such a day, go to the Musée de l’Annonciade to follow in the footsteps of Signac or Matisse.

The Gulf of Saint-Tropez takes on a completely different face once night falls. Entertainment is indeed at the heart of the Tropezian nights, and the festive and privileged evenings aboard the yachts moored in the Port are intermingled with the ballet of the clubbers who go to the Caves du Roy or the VIP Room.

Before joining the prestigious nightlife establishments, you can enjoy exceptional dishes thanks to the choice of gastronomic restaurants on the peninsula. From the bistro to La Vague d’Or, a 3-star restaurant in the Michelin guide, run by the goldsmith Arnaud Donckele, the restaurants of Saint-Tropez will thrill your taste buds.

For a memorable experience, head to the Tigrr, the subdued restaurant at the Hermitage, an idyllic place to watch the sunset before sipping a cocktail at the Opera Club. There you can extend the evening, even into the night, or join the Caves du Roy, the club at the Byblos Hotel, which has seen the most significant personalities pass by for more than 50 years.

The Gulf of Saint-Tropez is especially precious for its natural spaces, still wild. The coastal path, protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral, offers landscapes preserved from human activity.
